Name: Snap Judgments: Photo Exhibition and Artists' Reception
Date: November 29, 2018
Time: 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM CST
Event Description:
What do you think when you look at a photo? Even if the picture was taken by someone you know, you might end up making assumptions that simply are not accurate. What happens when you learn something that forces you to reconsider your “snap judgment”?

Over the past 10 years, more than 1,000 Des Moines area middle and high school students from 15 schools have participated in CultureALL’s photo ethnography program: Zoom in on Culture. The program is is incorporated into the Sociology curriculum of the Des Moines Public Schools.

This semester, students from five different classrooms at Hoover, Lincoln, and Roosevelt High Schools have been exploring concepts of culture, sub-culture, and identity with the help of CultureALL Ambassadors Mamta Israni and Phoebe Liang D’Alessandro. With the guidance of professional photographer Ryan Morrison they have been taking photos that help define their personal culture. Their best photos – along with short essays that put the photo in context for the viewer – will be on display in a public exhibition that tours the community.

This year’s exhibition will open with a special Artists’ Reception at the Iowa Hall of Pride.Students from all three schools will have a chance to view each other’s photos and show their own photos off to their friends and family. A special presentation will feature students who have volunteered to share what they have discovered by participating in the project. The program will be hosted by community leader Ako Abdul-Samad.

Come see the exhibition, meet some of the students, find out what they have learned , and help them celebrate their accomplishments. There is no cost to attend, but donations to CultureALL are always welcome. Doors open at 5:30- pm; the presentation begins at 6.

The Snap Judgments Zoom in on Culture exhibition will remain on display at the Iowa Hall of Pride through December 14. It will tour to other locations in the community next year.
